We would like to share with you a video that we've just created - Malaysia 'Lagenda Langkawi (1) and The Curse of Mahsuri'. (Lagenda is Lagend in Malay)
Langkawi Island is an archipelago made up 104 islands. 5 of which emerge during low tide. 4 islands are inhibited.
The main island is called Langkawi. It derived from 2 Malay words - Helang for Lang (means Eagle) and Kawi is brownish stone.
Langkawi belongs to Kedah State which is situated in the Northwest, close to Penang Island, 30km away from the main land. There are ferry services from Penang to Langkawi and an International Airport in Langkawi.
Langkawi is a Duty Free Island. The attractions are its scenic beaches & resorts, diving sites, villages, caves and mountains, wildlife, history, legends and heritage sites and its recent built Sky Bridge. Langkawi has been inscribed on UNESCO Geopark.
The residents are majority Malays whilst there are Thais, Chinese and Indians.
There are many legends surrounding the island. The most talked about is the early 19th century beautiful maiden named Mahsuri who was wronged and killed. It was all due to treachery and jealousy. Her father-in-law, the Chief of Langkawi and Village Headman handled the execution.
It was said that when she was stabbed, white blood issued forth. Witnesses of the killing believed that it was indisputable of her innocence.
She laid a curse on the island that had no peace and prosperity for 7 generations. After her death, her husband, young son and followers migrated to Kamala, Phuket, South Thailand.
The island has indeed stayed desolated for 7 generations. Not too long ago, the Kedah Government traced Mahsuri's descendants in Kamala. They were invited to visit Langkawi and offered to return for good but they had some important considerations to make.
The 7th generation of Mahsuri are Aishah Nawawi and Mohamed Jihan Nawawi. The portrait of Mahsuri was painted long before Aisah was traced. Aishah's features resemble Mahsuri most.
Whether it is coincidental, the curse was indeed lifted. Langkawi has become prosperous and today, it is one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
Thank you for watching.

@AccordionLadyMi Thanks very much Fran for the compliments. Glad that you enjoyed the video. To my knowledge the cable car to the Sky Bridge took 3 years to complete but I am not sure about the date of completion of the Sky Bridge. However, a friend informed me that it was built and completed about the same time the cable car was built.
Warm regards,
