Doringcourt's Helpful Hints

When a horse canters, he "leads" with either his right front or his left front foot. If he is leading with his left front leg, then he is on the "right lead". If he is leading with his left front leg, then he is on the "left lead". The hind legs are opposite. When a horse is on his right lead in the front, he is on his left lead in the back. When a horse is on his left lead in the front, he is on his right lead in the back.

To ask for a canter lead, bring your outside leg slightly behind the girth, and half-halt with your inside rein. You always want your horse to pick up his inside lead. That is, if you are making a circle to the left, he should pick up his left lead. If going to the right, his right lead.

If your horse does not pick up the right lead right away, bring him back down to a trot and then ask again.
