If you take into context totality of song, beats, words, etc., he is trying to show that the girl that got away is a sad moment, but to be upbeat about the rest of your life. One cannot spend their entire life trying to follow that person who is not ideal. If they were perfect for you, then you would still be together. The time spent cashing ghosts is time lost starting a conversation with someone who might be the girl who wont go away.

@redwingss77 it is sad but there's good news! I actually found one, similar story but I ran into her again at 6 flags over to Dallas 2 years later. 6 years later she sued me and got the house I built for us. Now we're just friends.
