'(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher' is a classic R&B hit by Jackie Wilson from 1967; as '(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher' the song became a soft rock hit for Rita Coolidge in 1977.

Jackie "Sonny" Wilson was born June 9,1934 in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Highland Park, Michigan. The only child of Jack and Eliza Mae Wilson from Columbus, Mississippi, Wilson's father was an alcoholic and generally unemployed. Eliza Mae who had lost two earlier children doted on Wilson and was a powerful influence on his life.

Wilson began singing at an early age. In his early teens Jackie formed a quartet, the Ever Ready Gospel Singers Group, which became a popular feature of churches in the area. Jackie wasn't religious, he just loved to sing and the cash came in handy for the cheap wine which he drank from the age of nine.

Overall "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" has proven more popular with female vocalists: besides Rita Coolidge, "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" has been recorded by Erma Franklin, Barbara Mandrell, Esther Phillips, Dolly Parton, Martha Reeves and Dana Valery.

Bette Midler sang a radically re-invented version on her 1973 Bette Midler album: Midler utilized "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" as the finale for each performance of her 1975 Broadway show Clams on the Half Shell Revue, singing the song while dancing atop a giant spinning record player.
