A television experiment. Cartoonist Chris Ware teams up with his animator, John Kuramoto, to make a cartoon version of a true story. Jeff Potter tells the story to host Ira Glass: about an art project, a bunch of first-graders, and how being behind the camera can rob you of your humanity even if the camera's not real. Chris and John supply the visuals.

  • "The Cameraman" featured on '...in 3 animated shorts' blog

  • What song is that at 3:02?

  • Recently, I went to see a band play. Though the crowd liked the band, I was the only one dancing. The others were too busy texting, tweeting, filming or taking pictures of the group.

I think our generation has stopped experiencing life. We're too busy reporting it.

  • Bill Nye collapsed during a speech to some college students last year, and nobody ran to help him. Instead, everybody was tweeting and updating their Facebook status with what had just happened!

  • Chris Ware and This American Life? This is relevant to my hipster interests.

  • I don't think you can blame this wholly on the fake camera. Sure, they make it seem a lot more extreme, but this is actually a common occurrence -- a phenomenon known as "diffusion of responsibility." This kind of thing happens all the time with people without cameras in their hands. The fact that this was a bunch of 5th and 6th graders makes this even more true.

  • This is so sad.

  • Super creative, love it!

  • awhh that was really good :)

  • @uncachable There are idiots and there are great journalists. A great journalist always put the human before the report. So if someone in a car crash is dying and you're the first one to get there, then you call the police, the ambulance and you help the person before taking pictures. There's no excuse not to. But sure, there have been too many cases where journalists have not given a damn about anything but their story.
