An interesting and challenging high country hike is part of the John Muir trail through Lyell canyon. It goes past Donohue Peak to Donohue Pass with the view of Mount Lyell. While the initial 8 miles is flat, with only a 100-200 foot gain in elevation, the final 3.6 miles is a more strenuous 2500 foot gain to an elevation of about 11,056 feet.
Mount Lyell, the highest Peak in Yosemite, is named for Sir Charles Lyell, a prominent geologist in the late 1800's whose theories are studied by geology students today.
