The advantage of the phased array is that it is capable of taking a complete image in one complete sweep, where it can take 8-10 sweeps of a conventional radar using the latest technology to take the same image. This is because the radar has an extremely large beam, almost like a spotlight aimed at the sky. And the multiple elements of the phased array can be used to shape the beam as to improve resolution for detection of certain types of weather phenomena.
