This is the opening battle.(I think to determine if you become an angel or devil. I haven't tested it.)
Your options are:
Win within 4 turns.
Survive for 4 turns.
Die(? Maybe gets you gameover. I don't know.)
If you survive for 4 turns without winning, you become an angel. I think if you win, you become a demon.
This game is highly underrated, extremely good, and very very very stylish. It's a very unique SRPG, both in gameplay and art/music style, which is rare, what with all the Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre clones out there.(All SRPGs fall in to one of those categories, pretty much. The only games I've played that really defined their own style of combat since that I've played are this and Disgaea, both of which use the Fire Emblem turn system and Tactics Ogre spell-targeting, but put enough of their own spin on it that it's a completely different game.)
I only wish that Atlus had picked up the series, and shown the western world how amazing it really is. The only game I know of that was ever planned for translation was Black/Matrix AD, which is a port of the original Saturn game with some more content.
From what I know, the series is:
Black/Matrix(Saturn, 08/27/1998)
Black/Matrix AD(DC, 09/30/1999, port of the original with aditional content, most notably being the game's "AD" mode, which has better and faster AI, I think.)
Black/Matrix Cross(PSX, 12/14/2000, port of AD with aditional content.)
Black/Matrix 2(PS2, 03/28/2002)
Black/Matrix 0(GBA, 08/30/2002)
Black/Matrix 0 double: 0(PSX,, 05/13/2004 this game, remake of the GBA game.)
And then the series died...?
So far, I've only played 0, 00, and Cross.
I really hope that the series is ported to modern game systems some time, and that new entries are made. It's a shame to see that it died out. :(
It doesn't look like Flight Plan is going to make any more games in this series... :(
There's a small hope with Summon Night having just been rereleased on NDS, and Summon Night 2 on the way... Maybe those will be translated, and then they'll redo BMC and BMOO on DS as well, and BM2 on PSP? And hopefully Atlus will pick that up, since I don't think Flight Plan has a North America devision...
Please release more Black/Matrix, flight plan!
I wish someone would translate this already...

@geldofpunk32 If you want it done, give it a shot. Believe it or not, it's not some impossible to do thing. Most translations are done by people who just want it translated already.

Flight-Plan is dead as of August 4th 2010. They even even removed their website.
I was hoping their games would be released outside of Japan.....but seems Atlus didn't want to publish them because of religious content.
As far as I knew, NIS (Nippon Ichi Software) was now working with the ex-staff of Flight-Plan on a PSP game.

@reiswindy Good to know.
I heard about the site going down not long after it happened. Really broke my heart, actually. :(
Hopefully, NIS can acquire the rights to FP licenses and maybe remake them/bring them over. If any company fits well with FP, it's NIS for sure.
