  • @Terrdemarzielle - It's precisely the combination of all those things you mentioned that probably made Bach the greatest composer of all times, there is no underestimating the power of hard work - but it alone will only take one to a certain level. The pure creative genius that is likely to be 10% of all things included, makes for 100%.

  • @physphilmusic Hang on. Great achievement doesn't require appreciation by a wide community. I don't know about other fields, but in the case of music, I simply feel that no one since Bach has had his combination of extraordinary curiosity, will and stamina for hard work, and most importantly, pure creative genius

This is true. Even in Bach's time it was true, most people didn't appreciate his music until after he was DEAD and something like 2/3 of it was LOST! Mozart loved to write really good quality stuff but when he finally got the post of Court Composer (a few years before he died) the new emperor only commissioned Mozart to compose a bunch of repetitive and empty CRAP melodies. Yeah even aristocrats are idiotic in their taste. Too many notes my ass.

  • @paqman67 There aren't hundreds of Bachs today, simply because people can't compose in the way Bach did. The extreme diversity of musical styles make any great achievement in any of these styles only appreciated by a limited community. This applies to everything from contemporary serious music, progressive rock, jazz, etc. As for mainstream music, most of it is commercialized trash, as the majority of people today are quite dim in their musical tastes (e.g. prefer the same forms and progressions
