PEEL -- Brampton has been officially named one of the world's safest cities by the World Health Organization.

The city, honoured during Brampton Day Sept. 18, is one of 10 in North America and the first GTA municipality to be designated as an International Safe Community.

"I am so proud of the citizens of Brampton because this award is given to cities that demonstrate that citizens are fully involved and engaged in each other and in their city," Mayor Susan Fennell said.

The Brampton Safe City Association works with residents, businesses, community groups, Peel police and the city to improve the quality of life through programs and awareness initiatives.
