i have a vague memory of one of my dads tools that looks just like the handle there.

I totally agree with you. Like I said... it's a terrible design for a weapon.

@vegasflyby Thanks! sorry for the late reply, been busy with my own prop projects!

Great prop kit! @tjhaywood100, I agree. The chrome phaser looked too much like a child's toy to me. Still in the spirit of the original Jeffries design but not "serious" looking enough. I love the Kelvin phaser but wish it would have had some dials/switches/controllers on the phaser 1 to make it more functional like the original. This may have been down the pike as this was never a fully developed prop. I'd love to get this kit and add those components! Where can you get this kit? Anyone know?

I wonder what kept it from misfiring in their pocket

@tjhaywood100 Agreed - it does look like it can work as a crude precursor of the 2266-era Phaser II from the Prime Timeline, and that's a good thing too, because if this design was already used on the Kelvin in 2233, then it predates the timeline change and would be part of the Prime Timeline's weapon design lineage!
As a gun, it's a terrible design. The button looks like it can be pressed just from holding the weapon.
Horrible trigger placement.

@Numinous123 Yeah, it's definitely not the most ergonomic design.

@rm10475 Duplicolor Gold and Dark Shadow gray. The P1 is Plastikote Burnished Silver (no longer made) dusted with with a dark silver metallic. The handle is also Burnished Silver.

It's a kit made from about 8-10 resin pieces and a few metal parts. It's one of the highest quality kits I've seen.
