Have you test the residual?It might be sodium carbonate or sodium oxide. I also put a burning charcoal in molten nitrate, the reaction residual corrosion my test tube and can not use in next time

Good question? but the test tube usually cracks due to the heat produced and i throw it away

I have also use molten chlorate react with charcoal, the reaction faster a lot and my test tube is also clear.
