Duck Baker, Richard Royal, the preachers son from Richmond Virginia, born 1949, seasoned traveler, raconteur, potential Maitre de Cuisine southern style, would be pool champion of the world - guitar player extraordinare.
I met Duck at one of his gigs in Brussels/Belgium in 1985 and bought his latest lp at that time, called "Under Your Heart". He recorded the album in Germany and it was digitally recorded. Duck told me that at that time it meant that he had to record a whole side (5 songs) of the album straight, without pausing or starting over when a mistake was made. Quite a feat when you know I practised this song for weeks and it me took 7 takes to record a plausible version...
Duck Baker is a living legend and a keeper of great American music. You can get his latest cd "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans" from his website www.duckbaker.com

  • this is so kooool!beautiful tone, what is the guitar ?

thanx mate, 10 stars,i really enjoyed this!!!

  • Thanks for all the compliments guys, much appreciated.

The guitar is a copy of a Martin "OO". The top is Engleman spruce and the back and sides are Brazilian rosewood (still affordable then :-). It was made in 1995 by John Gréven who still makes guitars in Portland Oregon.

  • yeeaahhh...I love Duck :D

  • I saw Duck Baker playing in Fulham once and he was great. I loved some of his early playing and was really taken with his "Wolverines" tune in hommage to Jelly Roll Morton. Later his music veered more into purer jazz, some of which I liked a lot but not all. This is a great tune and you played it really well.

  • Wicked changes..love it!

  • Nice tune; great composition & arrangement. Of course the execution is soulful. A beautiful instrument, too!
