i've never played this game, but maybe teleporters hurt you if you use them more than once? it looks like it's only needed once, at least on that level, so maybe it penalises you for using it more than is necessary?

In later levels you will see yellow flowers, you can use those to warp to somewhere else, however they hurt you in the process. Maybe those are the teleporters that the booklet mentions? Im not sure
