ABB IRB 1600 industrial robot performs a bluesy solo from the contemporary dance work Actuator by choreographer Thomas Freundlich. The 30-minute duet for dancer and robot premiered in May 2008 at the Z-in-Motion festival of the Zodiak Center for New Dance in Helsinki, Finland.

  • Interesting to watch, thanks for posting this.

  • Thank you!

  • Even after the numerous fatalities and injuries caused by industrial robots (come on, it's pretty much hydraulics and huge motors), someone would still design a dance to be performed by man & machine... Oh well..

Also, someone should stop that whining noise...

  • In an industrial setting, the operator is not allowed within range of the machine when running. Even here, I was only interacting with it physically in a few designated spots where the robot was moving veeeery slowly. Trust me, when you've seen it moving @ full speed, you REALLY don't want to be anywhere close by! :D

Some of the latest technologies do in fact allow operators to safely interact with industrial robots so it could be cool to see how that would translate into dance.

    Cheers!
