The Carib Territory is home to the Kalinago (Carib) Indians who once ruled the entire Eastern Caribbean. Dominica is home to about 3,000 Carib Indians, descendants of the original inhabitants of the island, who live in the Carib Territory. It was established in 1903 consisting of about 3,700 acres of land and owned exclusively by the Carib Indians.
There are over 370 million indigenous people in some 90 countries, living in all regions of the world. Of the some 7,000 languages today, it is estimated that more than 4,000 are spoken by indigenous peoples. Language specialists predict that up to 90 per cent of the world's languages are likely to become extinct by the end of the century.
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday September 13, by a majority of 144 states in favor, 4 votes against (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States) and 11 abstentions (Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burundi, Colombia, Georgia, Kenya, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Samoa and Ukraine). Since its adoption, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States have all reversed their positions and now endorse the Declaration. Colombia, Samoa have also reversed their positions and indicated their support for the Declaration.

  • I take great pride in watching this awesome footage & great pride in my Kalingo heritage...~ Outstanding and truly well said Chief Charles Williams~...

  • After the Spanish invation 500 years ago our Taino and Kalinago ancestors formed a peace and together fought for freedom. It is good to see that the spirit of that treaty still continues. Thank you Kasike (Chief) Charles. Our Guaitiao ceromony makes us relatives.

  • I applaud Chief Charles' unity affiliation with the United Confederation of Taino People. His positive participation within the Caribbean Indigenous Leadership is a shining beacon. I hope to hear more from this courageously astute Elder.

    Bo' matum Chief Charles Williams!
