STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- August 2, 2009. Fascinating presentation by a devout Muslim who is articulate, non-sectarian and committed to nonviolence. Meet Hesham El-Meligy - who describes what it is like to be a Muslim on Staten Island. (Event co-sponsored by Peace Action Staten Island and the Unitarian Church). In this clip: El-Meligy discusses the demographics of the Muslim population on Staten Island which is quite diverse: African-Americans, West Africans, Indonesians, Arabs, Pakistanis, Indians and a large Albanian community. The Muslim community has a total of five mosques on the Island, which many Staten Islanders are unaware of. El-Meligy also discusses the etymology of the term Muslim and explains how it relates to the term Islam.
