I think the RTP set and tileset limit can make it hard. Well when I can't help a bad map I just leave it. xD The writing, if done well, is more interesting then a fancy looking map to a majority of RPG Maker players lol. So long it's still good in terms of gameplay (movement on the map, whether it looks good or not).
Looking at that map, I'm not really sure how you can improve it. If you aren't using a tileE you cam put on some Mack details and then improve them. Otherwise it's fine. :P

Well... I hate mapping. Mapping is probably my worst ability in RPG Maker VX. Without good looking maps, it doesn't motivate me to continue on with my game. I'm trying very hard right now to make my maps look decent.
