China: Falun Gong Adherent Illegally Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison

Last week in Shijiazhuang City, a Chinese court sentenced Ms. Wang Sanying to four years in prison for her belief in the Falun Gong spiritual practice.

Last June, police had ransacked her home and stolen over $10,000 worth of cash and belongings.

During Ms. Wang's trial, her defense attorneys pointed out that China's Constitution clearly guarantees freedom of belief and freedom of speech—and that no Chinese law actually outlaws Falun Gong. They argued that interpretations made by China's courts are in violation of the Constitution, therefore cannot be used as a legal grounds to sentence Falun Gong practitioners.

The judge and prosecutor gave no response to this, but on January 21, the judge sentenced her to four years in prison. Her family says they will continue to appeal the case.

Just as you have the right to criticise the West's faults, other people also have the right to point out the wrong things that the Chinese are doing.
