I have a relative who lives in the countryside, when cutting the wood in the forest, to cut small stik (2 and 3 inches of diameter) using a machete. will be very sharp probably but he cuts them with a single blow. For this reason, I was surprised to see a demonstration where the cut straw.

@MichaelkSimmons that's called kiai and shows that they are mentally focused on what they are doing right that moment... in kendo you normally shout the name of the body part you strike at. If you hit your opponent but didn't shout or shouted the wrong term, you weren't accuratly concentrated and do not get the point. A kiai is supposed to go through your opponent, like an addition to your strike with a katana - if you experience a real kiai once, you'll understand.

@lokixxx with a katana you have to cut, if you hack, you don't get through the straw, and cutting is easier said than done, that straw thing probably is as tough as a human bone

where is the difficulty of cutting the straw? i'm serious
