The Times reports on the Conservative Party European Election campaign which places the call for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty at its heart

- David Cameron has put the call for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty at the centre of the Conservatives campaign for the June 4th elections to the European Parliament."

Launching a new campaign website, giveusareferendum.com, the Tory leader accused Gordon Brown of hypocrisy for failing to give the British people the chance to vote on the treaty.

By any account, the Lisbon Treaty is hugely significant, he said. It is, by all accounts, a constitution. That is why we are making this such an important issue at these European elections. -

So significant is the Lisbon treaty that David Cameron refuses to pledge a retrospective referendum, or even its repeal, should the treaty already be in force when The Conservatives take the keys to Number 10!

- Mr Cameron again refused to say whether the Conservatives would hold a referendum if they won the next election but the treaty had already been ratified by all the member states. -

He simply repeated the previous formula that they would not let matters rest there.
Well, Im afraid that not letting matters rest is not good enough. Be honest with the people and explain exactly what the Conservative Partys stance is on the issue. The voters deserve an unequivocal statement on what voting Conservative means.

Without this clarification, voting UKIP represents the best bet for Conservative supporters who have concerns about the direction of the European Union. A vote for UKIP will maintain pressure on all main parties, including the Conservative Party, to deliver a eurosceptic programme in government.

UKIP are very clear on their policy - no further retreat, and withdrawal. What's yours Mr Cameron?

The reality of voting Conservative on June 4th is you will end up with a bunch of pro-EU MEPs

  • In Europe but Not Run By Europe - it was a winning slogan for the Conservatives in 2004 and there's nothing wrong with it.

  • Except that while we are in the European Union we are run by the European Union so it's either completely stupid or another Tory lie to keep the populace happy and sedated whilst we lose everything slice by slice.

  • Thats an extremely negative way to look at things. The E.U. can be changed, if the U.K. actually takes an active interest in its policies.

  • They've tried this for decades with no success. Exactly how long are you prepared to wait for something that from past experience is unlikely to ever happen?

  • Indeed, it may not have happened in the past, but thats really because no-one has ever tried. It seems to me that UKIP want to take the easiest option without regard for its severe economic consequences.

  • "severe economic consequences" - Come again?

You have to question why we need another layer of supra-national government at all?

Can you tell me why the so-called conservative hierarchy want this version of big government so badly that nothing must be put in its way?

  • thank you for posting this....so when arte you going to get a projector and project this on the sides of buildings so people will be forced to see this stuff.?> there at present a state of war in the political sense to save england. if you lose america is doomed.

  • That actually shocked me, I always thought that William Hague was the one sane voice in the Torry party. I used to be a conservative member, but left and joined UKIP because of despair over the EU. Untill the conservatives make a firm anti EU stand, they will never get my vote again.

  • I certainly don't trust the tories yet. Their past history tells us that they were (and probably still are) part of an entrenched establishment that is working towards a global socialist government, disguised by a veneer of democracy. They may not be brazen globalists like labour but that is not a reason to trust ANY of their rhetoric.

  • He has to say that because we're now so deeply embroiled in the EU that leaving outright overnight is seen by 'opinion formers' as a too radical act. Hence he'll instantly get hit with charges of 'extremism'. Step by step is a likely more productive strategy - first get back some powers, any powers. Forcing the EU into reverse may cause some interesting gear-grinding and provide further opportunities. Of course, whether the Tories can be trusted to do even that is another, important question.
