From what I understand it was Universal who forced the showdown between Hitchcock and Hermann thus ending one of the most successful partnerships of director/composer in Hollywood's history. The released score is quite weak, what poor judgement!!

Hermann's score is superior in every way to John Addison's.

Truth is: the german actors Kieling, Felmy, Messemer and Strack played so outstandingly good that Hitchcock cut some scenes with them in order not to damage his star Paul Newman.

Hitchcock didn't want Paul Newman for the leading male role in this film. He wanted to cast Anthony Perkins for the leading male role. But the studio forced Hitchcock to cast Paul Newman. And Hitchcock didn't enjoy working with Paul Newman. Hitchcock cut some scenes, because the original ending he wanted was not used. He gave the cut scenes to his friend Francois Truffaut. Its somewhere in France.
