I was interested too in why B is used for magnetic field, so I googled it for my students. When Maxwell wrote his papers, he listed his topics, and then lettered them. The vector potential was the first thing he talked about, then the magnetic field (hence A and B) :-)

@WizardofCalculus I should have waited before I posted!!! I wasn't aware that it was possible to change the sign convention. I first came across electromagnetism in my geometry course as a curvature of a line bundle.
I am doing another course in the maths departtment at UCL, and he spent the first third talking about distributions!! I think I will need to go to the physics department!!!
