This is the first song I ever wrote back around 1955. The lyrics were not mine. They were written by my dear friend Doug McIntosh, a WW2 veteran who served in France and North Africa, and was a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany. We sent this song to Liberace while he was staying at the Savoy Hotel in London during a tour of the UK.
He sent us a handwritten letter to say that he liked the song, and had played and sung it in the tea rooms of the Savoy in front of a limited audience, but that he had no plans to record it. This is therefore only the second time this has been played to an audience for 54 years. My co writer died about 5 years ago and what happened to the letter I will never know, as it was not among his possessions.
I realise that this type of genre is now out of date, so this song will never have the opportunity of being sung by a proper singer, but there you go. Life goes on.

  • @terryclary I think he may well have been inspired by your song Terry. Truly. That is why I asked. I know his own "signature" song well. Musically I do think your song triggered an idea for him. I can hear it. I think you can safely say there's a connection between the two and your song reached and inspired him. You know, I came to know a lot about Liberace the man, away from the stage. He was grounded and caring. I never met anyone who did not know him who did not weep in memory of him.

  • @PhillipLWilcher Liberace made a song called "I don't care" his signature tune Phillip.

Alas it was not my song. He may have just liked the title and not the song. He would be a better judge than me, that is for sure. I like to think the title of my song inspired him to his, but that is just wishful thinking I excpect.

  • @terryclary Gladys gifted me some of his more casual clothes (still a touch showy though!) which I have tucked away here in a camphor chest! Aside from being a great showman he was also a sweet sweet man.

Are there actually two songs called "I Don't Care"?

  • @PhillipLWilcher Thank you so much for this gem of a comment Phillip. It must have been wonderful for you to have had such close contact with the family of Liberace........Such a great showman, and those costumes.......fantastic............... Terry

  • Dear Terry : You might be interested to know that Liberace's housekeeper and second "mom" Gladys Luckie recently turned 100. I've just been sent some photos taken of her on the great day. Much more frail though than when I first met with her many years ago. A wonderful woman!

  • Dear Terry, it's only my humble opinion, but great music doesn't go out of date. Thank you so much for posting your beautiful song. I'll send your link to my collaborator and I hope, like me, he will love your song. He has a beautiful voice and he is very talented.

    Kind regards,

Thank you for sharing and for your beautiful song and video. Thank you for a very interesting story behind this song. I personally think your song could be in a beautiful movie, sang and performed with great success!
