Miraculously preserved over the centuries, its artistic importance was unrecognized until an essay by J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings) revealed its unity and multi-dimensional structure. Beowulf is now regarded as the most important manuscript the Anglo-Saxons have handed down to us, of immense linguistic as well as poetic value.

This program sets out to trace the origins of the tribes that brought this epic into being, the war-like Northmen from Sweden, Denmark and Germany who were to conquer and settle regions of a more clement and fertile island that would become known as England, named after the tribe of the Angles. Using 3-D animation, location footage, archive materials and interviews, the Beowulf epic is examined in the light of the civilization that created it. It investigates their religious beliefs as well as their everyday life, and suggests that, old as the poem is, it may have roots in an even more ancient fertility cult.

  • Old english has German accent.

Modern English is NOT Dutch base. Dutch is almost 100% LOWER GERMAN!

Old English is more GERMAN or LOWER GERMAN base.

LOWER GERMAN = PLATTDEUTSCH another German language where people in North-West Germany speak! Platt spoken, kenn´ i ook...^^°^^

  • @TheGbxi Germans, Scandinavians and possibly Danes also... we're a Warrior mixed race, no doubt.

BTW, most English people you may speak to would say that they aren't German out of fear via the World Wars.

Many of us realise our ancestry, in fact we know we're Anglo Saxons. Surely though, today the English and Germans are different despite the ancestry.

    Language and now culture.

Apparently, I've hit a Thor spot...

It also seems that political correctness is the Swedish substitute for a lack of a sense of humour...

Henceforth I'll keep the vocabulary simple in my tweaks, since English isn't your first language...

    By the bye:

Don't you reside in the Land of Trolls?

    And of Eugenics?

And of ditzy, buxom female exchange students?

What's the Swedish battle flag - white on white?

  • @1man4RBE Man you seems to be a stupid racist and nothing else, and your trolling am I not intrested in. I know the history very well but you seems only trolling around.

  • Speaking of indigenous pussy being one of the prizes of war:

If you want to really piss off Sicilians and Southern Italians, merely mention the fact that Arabs, Berbers and Moors overran the place for centuries...and they most likely weren't all celibate.

For a follow up, repeat the process with Greeks concerning Turkish delight in the Aegean Islands and Greek Mainland for many centuries.

Then don't forget to send in your application for that much sought after position in the Diplomatic Corp.

  • @BirkaViking

    Excellent!

You've at least read the Cliff Notes for HISTORY FOR DUMMIES.

Now,a little focus on the singular and plural ( "was" cf "were") and sundry other matters of syntax, spelling and punctuation will have you appearing quasi-erudite in no time at all.

  • @1man4RBE The Normans was from the beginning Vikings that settled the part of France we call today Normandy= The land of the North men.

England was also attacked and settled by Vikings during the Viking age.

The Germanic Franks settled the Roman Gaul in the 300Ad and was first enemy of Rome but later on they were very close allied. And the Roman empire was depending on the Frankish warriors, Gothis warriors. Lombards, Vandals and other Germanic tribes warriors.

  • @Oswulf1

    Actually, you're half right...well done!

You dropped points because I never said the squareheads exterminated the Romanized Celts.

Like all invaders, the squareheads took the women and either killed, enslaved or ran off the surviving men.

Consequently, it obviously took many centuries for the funny bone to re-evolve in the hybrid stock.

    Tragic, really.

  • @BirkaViking

Obviously you're chilling on the computer after yet another hard days slog at the local sheltered workshop (remember: packing foam peanuts are NOT edible).

Y'know. of course, that the semi-intelligent Germans (Franks, Lombards) were the folks who gave the retarded Jutes, Angles and Saxons - the Hillbillies of Teutonia - the bums rush.

And later on, when the Viking-German-Gaul (Roman-Celt) descent Normans crossed the channel, they brought the Bretons with 'em (for a li'l payback).

  • @1man4RBE The Germanic tribes settled in the whole western Roman empire when the Romans western empire fell becuase of its own corruption.

But the west Roman empire wouldent at the same time been for so long with out the Germanic warriors the Romans hired for a very long time.

    Cheers

  • @1man4RBE The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes did not exterminate the Celts in the regions they settled. DNA evidence shows the population there descends from both races. Probably the Germanic invaders killed or drove out many of the men but took the women for themselves.

  • @1man4RBE Hehe sure dude, but you seems to forget that the Celts had whole Gaul also before the Roman invasion. And you fall on your own stupidity when you say Gallo-Roman. Those Celts that lived in the Roman empire couldent live like the Celts before they lived like Romans and nothing else.

The Celtish culture did the Romans wipe out and not the Germanic tribes.

And please dont try to learn me the history of the Germanic tribes and the Roman empire dude.
