Some from reading stuff on the internet, but lots of it (like this effect) just come from playing around and experimenting with different filters.

I have Photoshop but I just suck at it...I'm pro at GIMP since im using it from 2010 but with Photoshop I brought in January 2012...I just cant figure out how to use PS...It's much much harder then GIMP :/

Thanks so much! For the last step, instead of having to install the G'MIC thing, I just blurred the sharp edges with the largest fuzzy brush. It probably doesn't work as well, but it makes a small difference that I like.
