Yesterday, while walking my dog on my favourite beechtree lane, they were busy felling two of the beechtrees that had died off this year.
I walk there daily from 1993, and it is just sad to see them go.
What takes 200 years to grow is really down within a few minutes.
Yes, it is sad, dead or not. Can this wood be used like normal wood, even tho it's dead? Can they make furniture and such?

@ntheoret They have to take the dead trees down to stop them spreading diseases to other trees! They harbour honey fungus or some other type of fungus when beech trees dye in the roots and if it spreads to living trees they die aswell. So what they doing here is important. If you look at the branches its pretty much dead! They probably gonna plant some new ones I hope? I agree with you though it does look kinda sad to see such an old tree go

I always feel sad when I hear chain saws... I know that sometimes it's necessary to cut down trees, but when it's a tree like this one and so majestic it seems to be worse. I didn't know that beech trees could get so big, I learned a lot in google about this great tree. The only thing I hope, is that they replace it by another beech tree as soon as possible, they take a long time to get as big as the one they cut down. It always makes me sad to see felled trees... :-(
