Interesting drum solo from Tony Smith with the Jan Hammer Group , from a 1976 Berlin concert . This the last half of the song Stepping Stones. You can hear it in full by going to concert website Jazzfusion(dot)tv and look up the Jan Hammer Group Berlin concert.

  • That's a stripped back arrangement of a tune called 'Twenty One' .

  • @MrTrueseventh

It sounds a bit like that tune , but this is actually part of Stepping Stones , I didn't include the main part of the song .

  • @stringrip --- hi Stringrip , I beg to differ . what the band comes in with at 3:32 is a stripped back arrangement of 'Twenty One' . Was the drum solo tagged onto the end of Steppings Tones ? or used as a bridge between the 2 tunes maybe ?

  • @MrTrueseventh The drum solo and what the band came in with were tagged onto the end of the Stepping stones . I think Twenty One was done later on that show . You can listen to the whole thing by going to that website mentioned in the video explanation.

  • where are the cartoon images from? Album sleeve/cover?

  • They are from the cover of the Jan Hammer Group album "Oh Yeah" , you can see and hear more from that album on some other videos others have posted here as well.

  • That's "No Lands Man"!

I know the trio of Hammer,Anthony Jackson & Harvey Mason recorded this on Mason's "Earthmover" album!

  • This guy was the best drummer I've ever seen live, and I've seen Cobham and Lenny White. He was completely ambidextrous, vaguely akin to Simon Phillips, but way better and he didn't favor either hand.

  • What a freaking monster! I usually don't dig drum solos but he is so unique.
