The 43-year-old immigrant, believed to be an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, shot dead three men and one woman when he opened fire at the huge Sello shopping mall, one of the largest in Scandinavia.
Shortly before the attack he had shot dead his ex-girlfriend, who worked in the shopping mall, in her home. Finland shopping mall shooting: sixth body found * How killer 'calmly' picked off victims * Finland gunman phoned friend
After embarking on the killing spree Shkupolli fled the mall and was on the run for several hours before police found his body in his apartment in Espoo, six miles west of Helsinki. He had apparently committed suicide.
Shkupolli was known to police and had been issued with a restraining order to stop him approaching his former partner.
The attack caused panic among hundreds of people who were doing last-minute shopping for New Year's Eve.
Terrified bystanders were evacuated to a nearby library and fire station. Trains to the area were halted and police helicopters buzzed overhead as officers embarked on a manhunt.
"There were loads of people who were crying, and many vendors who were completely panicked," one witness told local radio.
Another witness told YLE radio that she saw the suspect carrying a 9mm, long-barrelled pistol and rushing past the cashier line of the supermarket inside the mall.
All four people he shot dead in the shopping centre were supermarket employees, it was reported.
Despite Finland having a population of just 5.3 million, there are around 1.6 million firearms in private hands.
The countrys long tradition of hunting puts it among the top five nations in the world for civilian gun ownership.
Politicians and religious leaders have called for tighter gun laws in a country which is known for heavy drinking and domestic violence and high rates of suicide.
The shooting is the latest in a series of shootings which have shocked Finland.
In September 2008, Matti Juhani Saari, a 22-year-old gunman killed nine fellow students and a teacher at a college in the western town of Kauhajoki before turning the gun on himself.
A year earlier, an 18-year-old student shot eight people at a high school in the south of the country, before killing himself.
Before the attacks, both young men posted clips on YouTube in which they showed off their firearms.

Yes; Sure it's the Serbs who are terrorists and therefore Serbs commited this massacre in Sweeden and tried to shot up a bunch of recruits in Fort Dix.
it's the Serbs who are on US terrorist watchlist and it's the Serbs who are at the top of Interpol/DEA chart in Europe.
Ah wait; It actually are Albanians....
It's Albania(Occupied kosovo too) as THE country on THE VERY TOP of both Interpol/DEA and CIA blacklists...
Yet you got that one thing right;
