About 100,000 Americans have bypass surgery every year. Bypass surgery is a treatment for artherosclerosis - hardening of the arteries. During the operation, a surgeon uses a vein from the patient's leg to carry blood around the blocked or hardened artery in the heart. Depending on the severity of the heart disease in each case, surgeons can bypass or more arteries to supply adequate blood flow to the heart. Recovery can take several weeks, but patients typically spend 5-6 days in the hospital. It can take several months till most patients are able to resume full physical activities.
Dr. Mike Moulton, cardiothoracic surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center explains how the surgery works and what a typical recovery is like.
