Rundown
First we copy the sound file we want to use to the right place, fire up Face Poser and use the phoneme extractor to add lip sync information to the sound file.

Then we add an actor, add the sound file to the actor's timeline, save it to a .vcd file and rebuild our scenes.image file.

Then we make a quick map to test it out in the game.

Can't extract?
1. Go to your start menu and open up the "Control Panel".
2. Make sure you have "View by" set to "Category" (not large/small icons).
3. Click on: "Ease of access", then "Speech recognition" and then "Text to Speech" (to the left).
4. A window should pop up, go to the "Speech Recognition" tab.
5. Set "Language" to "Microsoft Speech Recognizer 8.0 for Windows (English - UK)", if you can't, then just set it to something else and pray that it works.
6. Click Ok and try again (no program restart should be necessary).

  • Every time I right click in the Phoneme Editor it crashes, I googled around, can't find a fix anywhere.. Help?

  • @Feenuxz Unfortunately it doesn't work for everyone. This tool made by Valve is quite unstable and the fix used to make it work on Windows 7 and Vista makes it even more unstable.

You should try doing it a few times if you haven't already (like three to five times) to make sure it's not just a random crash.

  • @Silwerfish Well, isn't it possible to do it plain text based, like coding it in Notepad? Or is that too counter-intuitive?

  • @MacJARedd You can edit in the phonemes manually but it's lots of work.

  • @Silwerfish Ok. Thanks. :)

  • @Silwerfish Yeah I sort of got to the point where I'd just spam right click, apparently if you have two monitors, it will work if you place the program on your secondary monitor (not the main one) - Don't ask why. Now I'm just stuck on a bunch of extraction errors, I'll try messing around with Audacity to get it working.

  • @816nnm I have no idea.

  • @Silwerfish why wont mine show up like yours on1:26

  • @Dude5464673 Just do the parts that are relevant to your operating system, else things won't work. It could be that it can't quite interpret what's being said as well, even if the file is short.

  • well i only have a really small file , but after doing the vista and 7 tut stuff, do i need to download the file from XP?
