Hummingbirds can to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 15–80 times per second (depending on the species). They can fly backwards, and are the only group of birds able to do so.

Did you know that hummingbirds drink nectar for the energy boost they need to go catch bugs? Their primary diet is bugs, not nectar. They are very territorial --- one male will try to chase away all other males from a feeder he has decided is "his". There are several hummers who come to my feeders, and we get a great kick out of watching them. Especially the first one who discovered our feeders. He tries to defend all 7 of them against the other males who come around.

You know you don't have to colour the sugar water, DearToronto. It is possible the colouring may have lasting ill effects on the hummers, scientists aren't quite sure as of yet, but as long as the base of your feeder is red they have no problem finding it. Trust me, I had about five different humming birds around my feeders this summer. I know this as they all took to fighting over them all at once. So colouring the water is definitely not necessary =)

What is it with you inbreds? Both Toronto and Vancouver have their good and bad points. You're just showing how narrow-minded you are by saying one is better than the other. It also shows you don't get out much. I've met far too many people in both cities who haven't been to the other. Wake up and see something different for a change.
