in my home town in northern canada we get massive water beetles like this. in the spring they come out of the swamps and into water tanks or pools that are out side. then they begin to lay eggs :D at one time we had around 4 3 and a half inch water bugs in the same water tank !! another time a friend and i were near the local swamp and found several large green water bugs eating tad poles. man i love these guys :D

That's a good guess but what makes you think it's not Dytiscus?

You can use dechlorinator. Check with Hatari Invertebrates for rearing tips. You can find these beetles in small ponds. Learn to recognize the larvae because that's what you'll probably find this time of year. A light should be fine. Try to mimic the environment you find them in.

what other plants can I use? And what can I do so I dont have to clean the tank often? any ideas? Can I use this dechlorinator that has "aloe vera"? its this thing that fixes lost scales and heals them and makes the animals calm. I dont want it to die on me. So i want specific care.

There are a lot of papers available but you may need to do some library work. Go to Google Scholar and put in "rearing dytiscids."

What kind of species of diving beetle is that? O: can it go in a 5 gallon? Or would it do better in a ten? And do i need filtration system? like can i use it. I live in New jersey, america can you find these in america?
Dimunic 2 years ago
I don't know the species but the genus is Dytiscus, common across the world. You can definitely find them in New Jersey. No need for a filtration system as they are air breathers. 5 gallons is plenty.
