You can get a pack of 5 tatami mats from Kult of Athena for $27. If you get 3 cuts per mat (a little low, you should be able to get 4 easy) then that's $1.80 per cut. Still pretty expensive, but worth it if you really like it. 4 cuts per mat: $1.35 per cut, 5 cuts: $1.08 per cut.

The sword he is using is from HandMadeSwords......its about $200....its not a bad blade (i own one) but if you want slightly cheaper, try a Paul Chen Pratical Katana (about ~ $150) Both great swords.

try ebay, Handmadesword sells masahiro and furubushidoo swords for very reasonable amounts, i ordered mine from them and it only cost a total of $60.
