And what's the deal when aspiring children's book writers are looking to self publish and hire an artist. "Can't pay right now but it will be free advertising for you!"
Fuck that, the writer needs the artist more than the artist needs the writer. Fucking cheap bastards.
A problem too is that there's a lot of artists out there who think they're a 5 star restaurant when they're actually a taco stand trying to charge 5 star prices.
But they're such awful artists that they don't even have the eye to see what they're doing is crap because they're too proud of it.
In my experience the in most cases the Vendor won't admit that they're asking a ridiculous price for their product and /or service in the first place ... then they ridicule the potential client for trying to negotiate the vastly inflated prices down to a bottom line somewhat more manageable.
To not arrive in this situation the vendor has to pitch a reasonable price in the first place and set the expectations to the client.
"If I had a nickel.." The you're DOING IT WRONG...
I've been on the client side and the vendor side. 95% of the time it's the client having little understanding of the vendor's work. Especially corporate clients. Programming, advertising, printing, shipping, kitting, consulting, etc. Any of it. They change their mind endlessly, get cold feet, miss deadlines, and so on. And they still want you to work thanksgiving while they take the week off. That being said, there are a lot of great clients out there. Just say no to the ones that run your life.
ugh it's the same for photographers too. I LOVE hearing "Well you have the equip. & software already anyway... and I'm not looking to spend 'big' money here..." Do you say that to your mechanic? No I didn't think so.
