Why are they taking off the whole toenail?

Don't they usually put something on there to deplete the blood supply temporarily? Like a rubber band? Seems like it was bleeding an awful lot more than it should.

There's no pretty way of doing the procedure, its pretty barbaric. They're taking the whole thing off because it was growing down and out. I've had the nail taken out yet again because it grew wrong. I will take it out AGAIN and pretty much burn off the root.
