Turner Junction is located in the far western suburb of Chicago, West Chicago. Here the EJ&E (CN Owned) crosses UP's triple tracked main to Chicago. The junction is explained and key facts are pointed out.

Please note a correction:
After this video was filmed and released several changes have been made to the Junction, Trains are no longer required to take a warrant form the tower just some of them, also The EJ&E was Purchased and approved by the STB officialy on Dec 24th, 2008 and as of January 29th, 2009 Canadian National will have full control of the Elgin Joliet and Eastern West Company (EJEW) and will be using the entire line minus what US steel is keeping for them selves (2 or 3 miles) to reduce time and reduce trains running through the city. This means for Turner Junction the J will go from 14/Day to 25/Day, 11 of which will be CN run throughs.
This means the Junction will see any were from 80-125 trains a day.
Also note that BNSF Railway now has trackage rights from Eola to Mundelein running a coal train for Green Bay 2-3 times a week, with sometimes letting the train sit at Sutton Sidding in South Barrington.

Please enjoy, and comment on how i am doing.

  • awsome video mike. i can't beleive you got to see the chicago and northwestern heritage unit.once again great video.

  • Thank You. The CNW Heritage was common running during the summer months on this line.

  • did you get permission from the tower to stand in that area? I heard the J doesn't like people hanging around it...

  • Yes, but as i mentioned in the video The J, UP, and West Chicago Police do arrest and question tresspassers so remain away from the tower, this does not exculde the city street righ next to it though.

  • The engineer will usually through it into throttle 8 kicking out alot of black smoke! Framed well with the Signal Bridge!

  • I just relized you can't really hear the last voice over in the end. I basically said that some UP coal trains will pull over the junction, let off the conductor, pull forward to the push locomotive were the conductor will get on and drive the train (back up move) back over the junction...

  • ...into the yard onto the wye which then enters the J. It will stop on the J and the UP crew will be removed. A J crew then will head the coal train up to either a Indiana Power Plant or to one of the steel mills. This move is more common on Sundays when rail traffic permits it. To best capture this listen to a Scanner on you will hear the UP dispatcher taking to JB tower about a coal train back up move. The best area to view is from the library parking lot on the north side of the tracks.
