"robota" is synonym for "work" in slovak language which is very close to czech (Capek). it is used as noun "i'm going to robota" (workplace), "I have a robota to do" (work to do). i suppose as is was and still is used in common language, the slovak version of "robota" is the closest one to "robot" (pronunciation and meaning).

Also possible. I think it has older origins. Read something about drudgery. And there the mentioned robota as this kind of forced labor/laborer in parts of Poland and Austria-Hungary ... and furtehr east european monarchys. But i am not firm in east european languages ... especial not in their older = historical forms. But one thing today is fir sure .. now its understod worldwide
