Legendary character actor Timothy Carey's typically gripping performance in underrated noir classic The Killing, one of the first films of legendary director Stanley Kubrick.

The film is about the planning, execution, and aftermath of a complex heist from the criminals' point-of-view, similar to fellow classic The Asphalt Jungle. The target is a racetrack and Timothy Carey's role is to shoot down a horse from a parking lot in order to create a diversion.

Believing Carey's cover story of being a wounded veteran and being one himself, the parking attendant (James Edwards) sympathetically tries to be helpful. Carey, needing to shed himself of Edwards' presence, resorts to channeling racial ugliness in a poignant scene.

This clip is a continuous 5 minute portion of the film and not an edit of scenes. Carey appears in only one other scene earlier in the film in which he accepts the job.

Aside from this film, those interested in seeing more of Carey's work should check out:

Paths of Glory (1957) - Kubrick's follow-up to The Killing, a bleak WW1-set anti-war movie in which Carey plays one of three sacrificial lambs brought up on ridiculous charges of cowardice. Info: http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:37425~T0

The World's Greatest Sinner (1962) - A cult film written, directed, produced by and starring Carey, filmed over several years on a tiny budget, and featuring the first professional work of Frank Zappa on the soundtrack. A one-of-a-kind film about an ordinary man who changes his life to become a rock star and religious/cultist messiah, gradually becoming dark and corrupted by his power and self-aggrandizing. • @serotta2 Timothy also had a part as a bigoted cafe owner in the Starsky & Hutch episode 'The Velvet Jungle'

  • Poor black guard. He thought he was making a friend... :(

  • Looking for denny's commercial him him as frankensreins monster

  • Great scene from great film. Carey was a strikingly original actor. Once seen, never forgotten. I like what IMDB has: "Timothy Carey had one of the most unusual careers of all Hollywood character actors, obtaining full cult status for his portrayals of the doomed, the psychotic and the plain crazy. Carey's career was an "Only in America" type of story, and he retains his status as a Great American Original a decade after his death..."
