This is a chronicle of the surgical experience of having a partial parotidectomy. This video was made three weeks and two days after my surgery. I make these videos in the hopes of helping those who are looking for information on what it's like to experience this procedure, because there wasn't really anything out there from the patient perspective when I was looking for information. Good luck!

  • I'm getting this done too! in a week and i'm really nervous. the thing is that my tumor is under my chin and all the video's i've seen so far have their tumor in their parotid gland. btw: did the area hurt after 3 days? were you able to go out even a little??

  • @ammallah I think on day three I had enough energy to shower and eat a banana. The first day I left the house for fun was day 7. The area was pretty numb, so no, it didn't hurt so much, was more just uncomfortable, swollen, itchy, and tired. I was told no driving for 1 week.

Are you having a similar surgery, with a similar incision?

I hope your surgery goes well and that you have no problems, and that you heal quickly!

  • @bobolium well the tumor is the same but the lump is located under my chin, so they will cut an incision about 2 inches right next to the bump. i have to miss a few things on the days after my surgery, that's why i was asking. but it sounds like i'm going to have to rest for a while. haha

so the bruising you mentioned in some of the videos, are they healed yet? What about your lip? haha i hope nothing was perminent!

  • @ammallah I am about 16 weeks out now. The bruising healed, but the black line and the eye took a long time. The lip came back a few weeks ago, and I have full function once again. I still have numbness and stuff, but if you are only having a 2-inch incision, then hopefully you won't have so much to worry about with the loss of sensations and a numb ear for the rest of your life, I hope that's the case. You may have less healing time as well, because the cut is small. Good luck with the surgery!

  • Thanks for the videos. I've just had one of these too, and you're only a few weeks ahead of me. It's been good to hear someone else's experience.

  • @bigaus32 hope you are healing up from surgery well, and are having no side effects!

  • Thank you so much for doing this. I am having this procedure in two weeks and you have been such a great help!

  • On December 26th, I'll be 4 years post-op, I had a full one and mine was wrapped around my facial nerve. I had "useless lip" for about 2 mos. and just numbness since. If my chin itches, I have to scratch my ear to itch it. Crazy, I know. I have the same facial changes as well, but mine are more pronounced than yours b/c they removed the tumor AND the gland. Don't feel bad about hurling, I did too, in recovery with everyone watching lol Hopefully your feeling will return to pre-op normalcy!

  • thanks for vid.I just came out ffom hospital 5 days ago for same operation and suprised how little pain experienced.Apart from some swelling to cheek and the usual numbness that you also experienced.Stayed 2 nights in hospital with drain tube now removed and have dissolvable stitches covered over in plastic and doctor doesnt want to see me fo 4-6 weeks.[can remove plastic in 1 week] whiskers already doing that. Ian

hardly needed pain relief[di gesic] and no after effects from anasthetic,
