This week marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically-elected leader of what is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lumumba's pan-Africanism and his vision of a united Congo gained him many enemies. Both Belgium and the United States actively sought to have him killed. The CIA ordered his assassination but could not complete the job. Instead, the U.S. and Belgium covertly funneled cash and aid to rival politicians who seized power and arrested Lumumba. On Jan. 17th, 1961, after being beaten and tortured, Lumumba was shot and killed.

  • Amazingly there are still so many who are blindly loyal to this country. They are already toeing the line of being able to openly legally do it to american citizens. They can already assassinate americans overseas, no due process. How long till its open within the borders?

  • The more I study the US's deep-dark history of treachery, betrayal, subterfuge, intrigue, violence, blackops, war & propaganda in service to the forces of tyranny, technocratic fascism & corporate fraud, the harder it is to remember details about the names & dates that chronicle the insidious assault this nation has waged over 60 years on core democratic principles. From postwar Greece & Italy to Guatamala, Chile, Iran, Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, Congo etc, the story is tragically similiar.

  • Combiens des congolais vont regardé c vidéo...

  • Thanks for sharing. We are all longing for that day when the killers will come out and say: we are sorry for what we have done in the Congo. Even until today the west refuses to let the Congo go free.

I wonder why some one will go kill another man because their differences? God sees!

  • Thanks Democracy Now!, These techniques that the the U.S. government, banking and corporate elite have developed in other nations is now being brought home for thier own citizens to enjoy. The robbing, raping and destruction of the entire planet for the gain of the top 1% percent of the population! Welcome home misery.

  • Where is John Stockwell? He hasn't appeared since about 1990.

    Dead? Bought off? Silenced?

It's a shame Stockwell wasn't in public during George W. Bush and now under Obama.

  • Yet another example of America's staunch and dedicated support for democracy.

  • Thanks for posting. Sharing this with my teenage daughter-as the arent going to teach this in school.
