Nutrition and Your Mental Health

What does nutrition have to do with mental health? You might be surprised to find out the truth behind what happens when a person has a nutritional deficiency.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause all sorts of psychiatric symptoms including apathy, low energy, irritability, insomnia, low energy, agitation, fatigue, concentration problems, aches and pains, weight changes, including weight loss or weight gain. Sound a lot like the symptoms of depression? The truth is the average American diet of fast food is low in vital nutrition that you need for your body to function correctly.

This isn't to say that all depression is caused by bad nutrition but it's certainly a contributing factor in many cases and poor nutrition will always make depression worse. Antidepressant drugs also do not correct nutritional problems. So if your depressed because of nutritional problems an antidepressant will only partially cover up the problem and you body still won't function correctly.

  • This was a very interesting and informative video! Thank you!!

  • Nutrition and health are so important and can really be instrumental in improving someone's life. I am a Health/Life Coach and I actually have a vid on my channel about a great free e-book on health and nutrition that is tailored to help any individual as opposed to giving one diet or one solution for everyone (which never works).

  • Try whole grain pizza with fresh vegetables and organic cheese, pizza have a complete balance of nutrients; Protein, Carbohydrates, vitamins/minerals/bioflavonoids, just do not ruin it with a soft-drink, Europeans have been eating this for ages and most of them are not nearly as fat as Americans...

  • Orthomolecular Medicine is a term coined by Linus Pauling on a scientific paper he wrote in 1968, I like the way you present nutrition subjects, it bring a fresh aproach to this important subject, another thing you should consider is the depletion of nutrients on modern fruits and vegetables due to extensive farming practices and the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, not everyone can have an all organic diet but we can all try, pharmaceutical grade vitamins can help

  • @hodoboc i'd stay away from pizza entirely because of the crust. The crust isn't that healthy. it has refined carbs which gets converted into sugar once it enters your body. always stick with whole grains.

  • 1. Heart healthy diet i.e. salmon, tuna, veggies, fruits, whole grains, etc.(eliminate trans fat and processed foods)

    2. 30 minutes of cardio exercise at least three times a week/ strength training at least twice a week for 30 minutes

    3. sleep for 8-9 hours,

    4. stretch, relax, and meditate

    5. good hygiene

    == GOOD HEALTH!!!!!!!

  • Mind and Body is two different parts of a Human. Thus, a healthy person means that he/she have a sound mind and active body.

  • @hodoboc Of course it's healthy! It had starch, vegetable and dairy! Over eating is when it gets unhealthy and is a disadvantage to your health. :)
