Hillsborough High School, or the Big Red, is among the oldest high schools in the South. Construction for this building began in 1927. It was designed by distinguished architect Francis James Kennard and his son in the Gothic Revival style. There is an urban legend though that the design of the building originated with a sketch in the sand at a beach party made by Dr. Strayer. The bell tower was constructed in 1949. It was paid for by HHS students to honor the students who died in World War II. All of the names of the students who were killed during the war were placed on a plaque near the doorway. The H patio and band shell was built in 1963 and the sacred H was dedicated in 1964 to Mr. Wayne Hamilton, the assistant principal at the time the school was built. Hillsborough is home to Floridas first high school paper, The Red & Black, and Floridas first yearbook, The Hillsborean. The Red and Black started out in 1889 as Donnybrook and was later called the Star and Gulf. In 2006, The Red & Black placed second in the country as ranked by the National Scholastic Press Association. Hillsborough High School is a shining example of the human ability to adapt to new circumstances without losing sight of ones roots.
