As one walks through the meadows around our village it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of wild flowers that are flourishing here. This can, to a large degree, be attributed to the decline in agriculture that has enabled many of the fields to revert to their fallow state. The reasons for this are understandable, the lack of paid employment has had many people, over the past 40 years or so, leaving the countryside and moving to the city or even emigrating abroad in search of work, so that now there are not enough people to manage the fields or livestock to be led to pasture. This, for everybody here, is something to be regretted and the scene that Bara describes is one that is barely recognisable now

But while we ponder the changing nature of the landscape it is still a pleasure to wander through these fields, identifying the different types of flowers and making notes of their particular characteristics. Whether they be veterans of entire summers or short-lived survivors each has its time and place just long enough to stake its claim to a part of the meadow or the fringe of a wood. It is a perfectly orchestrated arrangement right from the beginning of the year when Violets and Wood Anemones start to appear.
Walking through these fields one comes upon majestic individuals that rise about the sea of waving grasses. Others seem more at ease remaining close to the ground, while others yet are more inter-dependent and rely on their neighbours. Here tendrils of Vetch and sweet pea tenaciously hold to each other for support and in their gatherings refuse to relinquish their part of the field.
Individual spires of Spiked Star of Bethlehem and Tassel Hyacinth briefly blaze across a green galaxy before yielding to clumps of Carthusian Pinks and clouds of Orlaya Grandiflora casting shadows over scarlet pimpernel and Kidney vetch.
Musk mallow can be found illuminating those dark under-branch hollows by the footpath and Harebells and Purple Gromwell all find a place in the margins. The deep purple spikes of Meadow Clary, in the company of Ox-eye Daisies, become ubiquitous across the fields.
But the much anticipated event is the appearance of a unique example of a lizard orchid which flowers for just a very short time. How this one plant ever found its way here is just one of the many mysteries that the countryside around has to offer the interested observer.

  • @cinderellalifestyle I, too, adore Queen Anne Lacy. Most of these flowers I never saw in the UK when I lived there, though one heard about them of course, but it is fantastic to see them for real. Glad you enjoyed your walk.

  • You are a wizard with the photography Andrew - not only HD but with all the appearance of 3D. How on earth do you do it?

  • @brychar66 Thanks so much, Charles, 3D? I don't know. Maybe it is the newish camera. It certainly is sharper than the previous, old faithful, one. Still getting to grips with it though. Great to see you here.
