mastertheguitar.co.uk - Master That Riff! 27: Miles Davis - So What

Check out the TAB @ http://www.mastertheguitar.co.uk/mtr/27/

Recorded with Ibanez AF105NT through Carvin Legacy.

P.S it moves between D Dorian and Eb Dorian, in order to simplify matters I refer to the general tonality as Dm and Ebm :).

  • I'm not sure if you're aware that what you're playing As the melody is actually what one could call a harmony to the original riff.

Being there's no melody on the treble clef, only chord placements, the melody resides on the bass clef.

Transposed to the treble clef the notes played are: D,A,B,C,D,E,C,D.

Everything else you got spot on.

No dis-respect intended here. Over all, what your doing is a great and much needed service.

    Regards,

    R~

  • Yeah as the double bass is playing the riff on the original this is an arrangement for the sonic range of the guitar. The first D played on the bass is ignored here, instead a grace note to the A is played to keep the groove. In fact it's very similar to George Benson's fantastic version. It's such an iconic riff that even playing it up in a higher register would work too. :)

  • you're videos are awesome... check out a band called MVP (Mark Varney Project) they do this awesome cover of this song! The band is Shawn Lane and Brett Garsed..

  • Thanks! MVP was fab, I have Truth In Shredding ( Gambale and Holdsworth ) and Centrifugal Funk (Gambale, Lane and Garsed), awesome albums :)

  • You own mostly ibanez's? I can see that.

  • Indeed, they are great guitars :).

  • thanks mate - you're a star!

  • Awesome! How did I miss this!

  • great work buddy.

  • you and the french guy give the best lessons by far thank you so much

  • Great lesson. You're a very good teacher.

  • The AF105NT has become my favorite go to guitar.

The guitar can be mellow and jazzy, great blues tones or flat out rock the house.

  • ok... I wasn't aware of the Benson version. I learned it from the '78 Real Book, which has Miles original version.

    Regards,

    R~
