The Iowa Electronic Markets, or IEM, is a group of real-money futures markets operated by the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business. Since it's formation in 1988, the IEM has earned a wide reputation as an election-forecasting tool with surprising accuracy. The IEM was created to let students to study business, economics and technology concepts in a hands-on environment; in addition giving faculty researchers a rich source of data and providing the public with a valuable forecasting tool. Today, the IEM is used to predict things like flu outbreaks, hurricane paths and even box office receipts; the IEM has become such a promising tool for teaching and research that Tippie has created an Institute to oversee the development and application of this innovative project.
This commitment to real-world interaction and stimulating public involvement in University's educational resources is central the mission of the Tippie College of Business.
