Here's a surviving copy of a Zephyr promo film along with black and white clips from a Zephyr performance. The audio is from an unreleased demo. Many serious fans of Zephyr and Tommy Bolin consider the demos to be a better recording than the album that was released. With footage of Tommy Bolin being extremely rare, this unites some of the little bit of footage that is left with some excellent unreleased audio from the same time period- 1969.

ZEPHYR 1969:

Candy Givens, vocal
David Givens, bass
John Faris, keyboard
Robbie Chamberlain, drums
Tommy Bolin, guitar

  • @MajorTom5150 I'm not sure; it was way west on Colfax. It might have been called Daners? The place near York St; could that have been Mammoth Gardens? Before I joined the band, I saw Zephry there numerous times, including opening for Jethro Tull. They all came out from backstage with shocked looks on their face when Tommy took about a 15 minute " Echoplex solo".

  • @neefferdude What dive? the Playpen or that place near Colorado Blvd.the one w/3 levels....do some acid in there on a full nite(back then of course)wait...that was the early70s...That was B.C. (before Coke). sorry,60 year old memory test...there was another place near York st.... saw Savoy Brown there.Colfax was fun back in the day:)~

  • Loved dem days... Zephyr always reminds me of the hill in Boulder and Party Hardy for days...Pure Gonzo!!!many moons:)~

  • @andy131481 No shit Andy. This was the bomb back then. I bought the studio album of this at 15 years old, the week it was released and still have a CD copy. Drop me a line and I'll send you a copy. Some other obscure stuff: Aorta, Captain Beyond, etc. Zephyr were the shit.

  • I played with Zephyr in 1980 for about 10 months (including that dive on Colfax), so let me add another perspective; Candy was a much better singer than you can imagine. None of the early recordings do her voice justice. She was MUCH better than Janis Joplin. Her harp skills were stellar. I saw her get on stage one night with James Cotton- she blew his ass off the stage. I had never done cocaine 'till I joined this band. We could do a 1/4 oz. BETWEEN SETS! I'm blessed to be alive today.

  • Bolin's guitar is awesome!

  • thanx johny you rock too cool

  • @ Johnnyvisionquest, 1st THANK YOU. 2nd do i know you?

@ HarpoWells 1, Tommy's brother Johnny has been performing Tommy's music for years also did you catch any of his Energy gigs, caught him in Evergreen Sr. @ a sockhop $5.00 then tramped around Denver & Boulder hittin ever gig he did, wow the Mammoth, did you ever hit The Family Dog Denver, my sis was the light tech.

  • Amen Andy131481. I followed Zephyr around Fort Collins and Mammoth Gardens in Denver the day. Candy would give me harmonica pointers between sets over a beer. I hope there are more tape tracks out there somewhere with her on the harp. Too cool. Someone needs to make a tribute band.
