New Song Academy is a 100% African American school in Sandtown, Baltimore whose mission is to raise indigenous leaders who will work to improve the quality of life in their neighborhood. To combat the drug trade as a primary employer, substandard education, and political disenfranchisement, the Dance Department at New Song designs its curriculum to familiarize students with their rich history. Knowledge of self is a powerful tool for nurturing healthy children who value their lives, the lives of others, and the health of their communities. Studying Africa in the 1st grade is an intentional effort to undo the negative stereotypes associated with the homeland of our students' ancestors. In tandem with their homerooom instruction where students are reading, writing and examining African climates, textiles, and cultures, the 1st grade students' dance class introduced them to West African music and movement. Making a dance music video to teach what they learned was a strategy to make their education relevant and memorable, not just for themselves, but for our entire community.
*PLEASE NOTE: This version is a remix of the original song "Teach Me How to Dougie," recorded by American hip hop group Cali Swag District. The song was released digitally on April 12, 2010 as the first single from the album through Capitol Records.
