@oomblah Karpinnen used an abus stamfli which would have been fisa minimum weight, like Kobe's Empacher. Wooden sculls didnt make as much difference as you might think, particularly with Karpinnen rating 29 for much of the race.

@NAXE5 Somehow, back then Karppinen used to do 5400 on the Nielsen erg, when 5000 was already World-class. Somehow, at over 50 he felt like going back to racing and became Finnish national champ in the 4x again. I've also read this (in World Rowing Magazine) and yes, I buy it...

According to Concept 2, the world record for ages 40-49 is 5:57.5.
The record for ages 50-54 is 6:07.7
Somehow I just don't buy that he is ~15s faster than the world record for his age.
This is for me one of the best races I ever saw !
