  • What kind of shoes does a flatfoot clogger wear? I don't like the jingle-tap shoes and want something more authentic. I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

  • Comfortable shoes with a sole hard enough to make a sound. Soles made of leather, or hard rubber will work. You can wear taps also. For flatfoot dancing most people use the same kind of solid taps that tap dancers wear.

  • It's interesting how many variations there are in what's called (and by who) "clogging", "flatfooting" and "buckdancing." Definitely recommend Les Blanc/Mike seeger film "Talking Feet" for great demos and discussion of this. Burton Edwards, fabulous dancer featured on the film, has an interesting take on it. Anyway, it's all good! : )

  • Talking Feet is a terrific documentary! It was made in a limited amount of time, which didn't allow the production team to travel to some other parts of the South East that have a long history of old time step dancing and use different terminology. A good rule of thumb is to refer to the dancer using the same terminology that they use to describe themselves. It makes it harder to compare specific dancers, but these dances are individualized and not uniform even within a specific grouping.

  • Oh, awesome! Thansk so much for putting this up. I love the fan. Too funny! What is the little square platform he's dancing on made of? Do you know? It looks like a giant ceramic tile. s2b

  • Cordell is dancing on a floorboard from an airplane.

  • Hillbilly tap dance for the win.

    I love bluegrass music.

  • You can find pockets of this kind of dancing in Canada. Have to go south for the big competitions though. The Atlantic Provinces are big on all these forms.

  • It sure is. You just can't beat it. Especially now that clogging has gotten modern.

  • Cool moves!

  • I also hope the current & future generations keep this dancing alive. I worry about that.

  • Thank you. It sounds like men's shoes are likely to be all right. I guess taps would make the sound carry better through the music. I used to do flamenco and we made plenty of noise without taps! LOL.
